Caromb Clinging to the foothills of the Mont Ventoux and coiled at the heart of the Comtadin amphitheatre, the village of Caromb benefits from a remarkable location that has dictated the pace of life of its inhabitants throughout the ages. Caromb boasts an astonishing national heritage. The forests of the massif du Paty contain a vast array of Mediterranean plants that can be discovered on a long hike. The richness of the land and the quality of the climate have fashioned a harmonious landscape of olive trees and vines. These traditional Provencal plants strongly contribute to the southern French way of life. The community of Caromb is particularly attached to its roots and respects the traditions which have forged its identity. Provencal language groups are extremely active, both in teaching the language to younger generations and in studying the toponymy of the village’s various streets and districts. The custom of ‘tian de faiòu’ that takes place on the 22nd September attracts more and more people each year. The dish used to be cooked in bakers’ ovens and its ingredients still remain a heated topic for discussion today: everyone has a preference for the variety of beans or pig parts that should be used. The only thing people seem to agree on, however, is the number of sprigs of sage (three) necessary for the success of this essential dish! In families, the thirteen desserts and the three white tablecloths are an integral part of Christmas celebrations. It’s the diversity of this heritage that makes it so rich. It’s this richness that explains why the locals are so passionate about it. Paty Lake A haven of freshness in a landscape baked under the summer sun, Paty Lake is a privileged holiday spot for the locals. Constructed between 1764 and 1766, thanks to the Reverand Morand, the dam embedded in the chalky rocks of the ‘Conférents’ holds 400 000 m3 of water. This 18th century technological marvel has contributed to the greatness of the village. As Auguste Bourguignon, local doctor and poet, said, “Sé lou Countat éro un moutoun Cavaillon et Caroumb nen sarien lei rougoun”* . Thanks to Paty Lake, Caromb’s agriculture has never experienced the the problem of droughts, as described by Marcel Pagnol in his accounts of Provencal life. Today, irrigation is no longer the principal purpose of Paty Lake. Fishing, hiking and relaxing on the lake’s banks contribute to a unique quality of life. Above the lake in the pine forests, the chapel Notre Dame de la Victoire (spared from the revolutionary furore thanks to its remoteness), still watches over Caromb. Beyond these historical and religious references, the massif du Paty is an important tourist attraction for the village, thanks to its hiking trails and vegetation.
